On his objection to statements made by the President and others, Russ Feingold states “Against such a backdrop, what began as a few general references to “getting back at those towel heads” soon became more directed to the religion of Islam itself. This was long after President Bush had made the fundamental mistake of referring to our fight against Al Qaeda as a “crusade”. (He apologized.) I noted the coordination by the White House, various conservative groups, and Fox News to mint a new tern to describe what America was up against post-9/11 – Islamo-facism… Nothing symbolized for me the deterioration in our attitude toward Muslims more than the brief use of this term.”
