"In September 1980, Saddam declared the abrogation of the Algiers Accord signed in 1975 with Iran, and soon afterward a war broke out. The eight-year war between Iraq and Iran [from September 22, 1980, to August 20, 1988] killed about 1 million people in the two countries and caused at least 900 billion US dollars in total losses."
