In Iraq, “On the afternoon of 19 August [2003], a flatbed truck carrying about a ton of high explosives was detonated at the UN’s Baghdad headquarters at the Canal Hotel. Twenty-two people were killed and 150 injured… [Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Iraq] Sergio de Mello was among those killed. …A group affiliated with al-Qaeda took credit for the operation.”
