Journalist Abdel Bari Atwan met with Mullah Krikar, the leader of Kurdish Sunni Islamist group Ansar al-Islam in April 2005. “…he vigorously denied that al Qaeda had helped Ansar al-Islam in any way. He did, however, concede that he had approached bin Laden for financial help in 1998 when he and two other members of the Islamic Movement went to Peshawar [Pakistan] to raise funds for their battle against the Ba’th regime [of Iraq].” [The 15th of the month used for date sorting purposes only.]
