In an interview with author Stephen Hayes on November 17, 2006, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) discussed the enhanced interrogation techniques that Vice President Dick Cheney favored for use in the war on terror. ” ‘Dick thinks that the most important tool we’ve got is intelligence in the war on terror. I get that. My view was that some techniques should never be used because they then damaged our image with people in the world. And in my view, it made us no different from them or hard to tell the difference between ourselves and them. And my belief is that if you inflict enough physical pain on somebody, then they’re going to tell you whatever it is you want to hear.’ ”
