Tim Weiner bio

Tim Weiner is an American author who won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 1988 as a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer. After graduating from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in 1979, he became a reporter for the Kansas City Times from 1981 to 1982. In 1982, he shared the 1982 Pulitzer Prize with other reporters at the Kansas City Times.

From 1982 to 1992, Weiner served as a foreign correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer. In 1988, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports on secret spending by the Pentagon and CIA. These articles served as the foundation for his 1990 book, Blank Check: The Pentagon’s Black Budget.

In 1993, Tim Weiner joined The New York Times and served as a foreign correspondent in Mexico and a National Security Correspondent in Washington, D.C. His book Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA won the 2007 National Book Award for nonfiction.

Weiner has reported from 18 nations, including the Philippines, Cuba, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He is currently working on a history of the FBI and national security as well as lecturing internationally on intelligence and journalism.
