“In early 2000, the United States began a high-level effort to persuade Pakistan to use its influence over the Taliban.” Despite assurances by leader Pervez Musharraf, there didn’t seem to be any progress. “By September [26, 2000], the United States was becoming openly critical of Pakistan for supporting a Taliban military offensive aimed at completing the conquest of Afghanistan.”
