On September 11, 2001, “In the White House bunker, reports began coming in at 10:02 about an inbound aircraft, presumably hijacked. The reports were coming from the Secret Service, which was talking to someone at FAA [Federal Aviation Administration] Headquarters. Unbeknownst to the Secret Service and the White House, FAA Headquarters may have been following a computer projection of United 93’s flight path, not the actual radar returns. Thus, over the succeeding minutes, updates would be offered reflecting United 93’s coming closer and closer to Washington, when in fact it was already down. NORAD had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation. At 10:07, its representative on the [Pentagon-hosted] Air Threat Conference Call stated that NORAD had ‘no indication of a hijack heading to D.C. at this time.’ ”
