“By the end of August 2003, the military’s public estimate of active resisters to the occupation [in Iraq] ranged from a low of 5,000 to a high of about 10,000 people. But private estimates about the tenacity of the insurgency were more alarming. It was not so much because of the large numbers of fighters who were involved in the insurgency but because of the assessment as to the depth and nature of support for the insurgents.” [The 31st of the month used for date sorting purposes only.]
