In an interview with the BBC on August 18, 2002, when asked what he expected to find in Iraq, chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix said: ” ‘I’m not assuming at all that the Iraqis have retained weapons of mass destruction… At the same time, it would evidently be naive of me to conclude that they don’t. …So on-site inspection is important.’ Did I [Blix] have any idea what the Iraqi’s might have? ‘Well, we listen to…various intelligence organizations, but they are not putting any evidence on the table, and it would be our job to go to the various places they might have talked about and see on site whether there was something or not.’ “
