Former Iraqi general Georges Sada wrote: “I learned from a close family member of a high-ranking Iraqi official that Saddam made arrangements in August 1990 to acquire nuclear weapons directly from a group of nuclear scientists in China. After the invasion of Kuwait [on August 2, 1990], Saddam realized that scrutiny of his weapons programs was going to be much too intense for Iraq to continue nuclear development, and it would have been next to impossible to maintain secrecy.
