Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, then-Commander of the ground forces in Iraq, wrote: “On July 9 [2003], the Iranian army seized a disputed southern border post inside Iraq and, from a diplomatic standpoint, all hell broke loose. We had to be prepared to reestablish the recognized international boundaries of Iraq. …After securing an agreement to maintain the status quo on the disputed southern boundaries between Iraq and Iran, the British government persuaded Iran to destroy the border post and pull its troops back into Iranian territory.”
