Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld “was obviously upset about the Supreme Court decision a week earlier [June 29, 2006] in the Hamdan v. Rumsfeld ruling that the Bush administration in effect had to respect the rights of terror suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to have lawyers and trials. Rumsfeld felt they should be interrogated and kept in detention to keep them off the battlefield. The court’s decision was a major blow to the Bush administration’s ideas about fighting the war on terror.”
