On May 5 [2004], the president chastised Rumsfeld in the Oval Office and then authorized White House officials to leak the dressing-down to reporters. The next day [May 6, 2004], the president apologized for the scandal during a brief appearance in the White House Rose Garden, where he said that he was ‘sorry for the humiliation suffered by Iraqi prisoners and the humiliation suffered by their families.’ ”
