“On May 6 [2003], New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof published a column suggesting that in the lead-up to the war [in Iraq] the [Bush] administration had used intelligence that it had known to be false. Citing anonymous sources, Kristof wrote that the Vice President’s [Dick Cheney’s] office had asked for an investigation into a claim that Iraq had tried to buy uranium from Niger. As early as February 2002 the envoy had told the CIA and State Department that the information was ‘unequivocally wrong’ and that the documents associated with the claim had been forged.”
