“On May 29 [2005], New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman…who had supported the [Bush] administration’s war in Iraq, denounced Guantanamo for ‘inflaming sentiments against the U.S. all over the world…’ Friedman decried Guantanamo as ‘worse than an embarrassment…[it is] becoming the anti-Statue of Liberty.’ He called for the detainees to be prosecuted if they could be, and if not, he said, they should be let go. As for the prison camp, he said, ‘Just shut it down and plow it under.’ ”
