“In May [11] 2006, [journalist] Leslie Cauley reported in USA Today that the NSA [National Security Agency] had been secretly collecting information about tens of millions of telephone calls, reaching ‘into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans–most of whom aren’t suspected of any crime.’ This collection did not involve the contents of the conversations but did record data about who was calling whom that could easily be cross-referenced with other information to find out a tremendous amount about the callers.”
