“In February [26] 2003, as the U.S. military was preparing to invade Iraq, [Afghan President Hamid] Karzai took the unusual step of testifying before a Senate committee. He was asked if he had any advice for the United States. ‘Whatever you do in Iraq should not reduce your attention on Afghanistan,’ he said. By then, however, many U.S. military assets had already been diverted to Kuwait, the launchpad for the Iraq War. Afghanistan, clearly, was not the priority.”
