On February 26, 2002, a week after The New York Times divulged the existence of the Office of Strategic Influence (the Pentagon group which built support for the war on terror through psychological operations targeted at foreign media), Secretary of Defense Donald “Rumsfeld said it was being ‘closed down,’ not so much as a matter of principle but because its clandestine work had been ‘damaged’ by the revelation of its existence. Reports that its activities had merely been rerouted to other parts of the Pentagon bureaucracy persisted after its demise.”
