Member of the Iraqi interim governing council Ahmad Chalabi “gave an interview to the British Sunday Telegraph [on February 18, 2004]. He casually dismissed the charge that his Iraqi National Congress had provided the American government with bogus intelligence on weapons of mass destruction. ‘We are heroes in error,’ he told the reporter. ‘As far as we’re concerned, we’ve been entirely successful. That tyrant Saddam is gone and the Americans are in Baghdad. What was said before is not important. The Bush administration is looking for a scapegoat. We’re ready to fall on our swords if he wants.’ ”
