Journalist Ahmed Rashid wrote of the Taliban resurgence in Pakistan in the New York Review of Books on January 29, 2004: “In Kandahar [Afghanistan], Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of President [Hamid] Karzai, echoed my worst fears: ‘The Taliban are gathering in the same places from where they started; it’s like the rerun of an old movie,’ he said sadly.”
