9/11 hijacker Hani Hanjour “had lived in the United States at various times throughout the 1990s and already had a pilot’s license when he arrived in Afghanistan for training in jihad. When senior al Qaeda leadership discovered that they had a trained pilot in their midst who had also lived in America, Hanjour was recruited immediately to the planes operation. He arrived in San Diego and met [fellow hijacker Nawaf al] Hazmi on December 8, 2000.”
