On December 21, 2002, CIA Director George Tenet and Deputy Director John McLauglin met in the Oval Office with President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card. “The meeting was for presenting ‘The Case’ on [Iraq’s] WMD as it might be presented to a jury with Top Secret security clearances…The presentation was a flop. Bush turned to Tenet. ‘I’ve been told all this intelligence about having WMD and this is the best we’ve got?’ From the end of one of the couches in the Oval Office, Tenet rose up, threw his arms in the air. ‘It’s a slam dunk case!’ the DCI said. Bush pressed. ‘George [Tenet], how confident are you?’…[Tenet said,] ‘Don’t worry, it’s a slam dunk!’…The president told Tenet several times, ‘Make sure no one stretches to make our case.’ ”
