On December 20, 2001, a New York Times article by Judith Miller declared: ” ‘An Iraqi defector who described himself as a civil engineer said he personally worked on renovations of secret facilities for biological, chemical and nuclear weapons in underground wells, private villas and under the Saddam Hussein hospital in Baghdad as recently as a year ago.’ The defector, Adnan Ihsan Saeed al-Haideri, spoke to Miller in an interview arranged in Bangkok [Thailand] by the Iraqi National Congress… Once the American invasion of Iraq began in 2003, other journalists…would raise serious doubts about the defector’s claims. But in truth the CIA had known that al-Haideri was suspect from the start–he had flunked a CIA lie-detector test three days before the Miller article appeared.”
