“Prince Turki [al Faisal], the former head of Saudi intelligence, recalled bin Laden’s offer of help against Saddam Hussein in an interview with Arab News [that appeared on November 7, 2001]. ‘[Bin Laden] believed that he was capable of preparing an army to challenge Saddam’s forces. …he opposed the Kingdom’s [Saudi Arabia’s] decision to call friendly forces, [the U.S. military]. By doing so, he disobeyed the ruler and violated the fatwa of senior Islamic scholars, who had endorsed the plan as an essential move to fight [Saddam’s] aggression. I saw radical changes in his [bin Laden’s] personality as he changed from a calm, peaceful and gentle man interested in helping Muslims into a person who believed that he would be able to amass and command an army to liberate Kuwait. It revealed his arrogance.’ ”
