Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, bin Laden’s brother-in-law, funded numerous terrorist operations. Though he was in U.S. custody, he had been sentenced to death in absentia in Jordan. At the urging of Secretary of State Warren Christopher, who didn’t want to strain foreign relations, in January 1995, “Khalifa was deported to Jordan, where, at a later trial, a witness recanted and he was set free.” [The 15th of the month used for date sorting purposes only.]
