In the Christian Science Monitor on November 2, 2001, former National Security Advisor under the Carter administration, Zbigniew Brzezinski said in reference to the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan: ” ‘When we started out, we were going to smash Al Qaeda and punish the Taliban. Now we seem to be getting engaged in an Afghan civil war, almost as an end in itself. That could be a quagmire.’ ”
