“The CLI [Committee for the Liberation of Iraq] was formed in November 2002, featuring [neoconservative political analyst William] Kristol, [former CIA director R. James] Woolsey, [neoconservative political analyst Robert] Kagan, [Chairman of the Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee Richard] Perle, and PNAC [Project for the New American Century] Executive Director Gary Schmitt. The committee accused Iraq of acquiring weapons of mass destruction and of ‘supporting international terrorism.’ The committee’s declared purpose was to ‘educate’ the American public to the need for war against Iraq. It presented rationales that went beyond the supposed WMD threat to include promotion of ‘regional peace, political freedom and international security through replacement of the Saddam Hussein regime with a democratic government that respects the rights of the Iraqi people and ceases to threaten the community of nations.’ ” [The 15th of the month used for date sorting purposes only.]
