“Interviewed [on November 14, 2002] on the PBS program ‘Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg,’ [Defense Policy Board Adviser Richard] Perle said he was ‘rather uncomfortable with the support that we gave Saddam during the war between Iraq and Iran.’ In his view, the right course immediately following that war would have been to say to Saddam, ‘Now we’ve had enough of you, too, and we’re not going to tolerate it.’ When the United States didn’t do that, Perle and many others, including [then-Undersecretary of Defense Paul] Wolfowitz, urged the first Bush administration to remove him at the end of the 1991 war.”
