According to a New York Times article on October 4, 2002: “The White House…displayed a curiously tin ear when it came to tolerating its American fundamentalists’ mean-spirited views of Islam. …The Reverend Jerry Vines, a former president of the Southern Baptists, America’s largest Protestant denomination, said the Prophet Mohammed was a ‘demon-possessed pedophile.’ Televangelist Reverend Jerry Falwell said, ‘I think the Prophet Mohammed was a terrorist,’ on CBS’s 60 Minutes, portraying him as well as ‘a violent man, a man of war.’ His fellow televangelist, the Reverend Benny Hinn, described the Arab-Israeli conflict ‘not as a war between Arabs and Jews, but as a war between God and the devil.’ Franklin Graham, evangelist Billy Graham’s son, who had delivered the benediction at the 1996 and 2000 Republican conventions and the invocation at President Bush’s first inauguration, dismissed Islam as a ‘very evil and wicked religion.’ …Right-wing columnist Ann Coulter proposed to ‘invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.’ ”
