President George W. Bush, during a Welcome Event in Charlotte, North Carolina: “No longer can we assume oceans will protect us. As a matter of fact, quite the contrary. We must assume that the enemy is coming, and we’ve got to do everything we can to protect the homeland. That’s why I started talking about the issue of Iraq. In the new reality we must view all threats — we must take all threats seriously. We must have a cold, hard look at every threat facing America. And the man over there in Iraq is a threat. After all he has gassed his own people. (Applause.) He hates what we stand for. He hates what America believes in.”
