On October 12, 1999, Pakistani General Pervez “Musharraf engineered a military coup that ousted Nawaz Sharif, the elected prime minister, who had dismissed him for allegedly launching the summer 1999 Kargil War without authority. Musharraf responded by leading a bloodless coup and installing himself as ‘chief executive.’ In June 2001 he declared himself president of Pakistan.”
